Go to the grocery store and you will find at least three coffee products with the Certified Organic label on it. The question running through many peoples minds is “What does it mean when a food label states that it is Certified Organic?” There are so many labels in the coffee industry that points out that a certain brand of coffee is organic. It can be deceiving, because some coffees may only be partially organic. There could be a mixture of organic and other chemically processed substances.

Just like “Green Marketing” in past, Organic has become a very lucrative business, so you are finding the term used more and more. Also, the importance of having a certified label or anything similar is necessary to assure the general public that the product is safe.

What are the implications of having Certified ?

1. The coffee beans were grown and processed using environmentally safe procedures and methods. It means that all aspects of the production and growth of the product has passed stringent environmentally safe standards.

2. It means that the farmers growing the coffee without chemical based pesticides and fertilizers now have a sustainable environment.

3. You and I are saved from chronic diseases and illnesses that have sprung from exposure to chemicals found in the pesticides and fertilizers of those products which are not certified organic products.

4. Certified manufacturers assure the general public and their workers that they have taken precautions and the necessary steps to eliminate the harmful chemicals that affect workers in the coffee fields as well as the consumers who ingest the chemicals. These steps include:

1. Growing the certified trees in a natural environment where the wildlife plays a role in the upkeep of the trees.
2. Maintaining several insects that help eliminate pests encourage the trees to be healthier and have no exposure to insecticides that are absorbed in the coffee cherries.
